Changelog

Version 7:

  • You can choose one default-entry which will be opened if you click on Jumplist-Launchers Superbar-icon. An entry will be added to your Jumplists which opens the configuration-window of the Jumplist-Launcher
  • The interface has been revised agaom (special thanks go to Heiko Eckendorf for the concept)
  • The issue where people were unable to create Jumplists is finally fixed

Version 6:

  • Every element can now be executed with command-line arguments (doesn’t make much sense for non-executable files though)
  • Shortcuts added via drag’n'drop will be dissolved to their target. This includes their arguments.
  • If somehow an icon couldn’t be loaded it will now be replaced by a question mark instead of throwing cryptic error messages at you
  • The interface and workflow to add files have been revised
  • People who weren’t able to change the max. number of jumplist-item should now be able to do so

Version 5:

  • groups and entries in the treeview can now be moved via drag’n'drop
  • after deleting items in the treeview icons don’t become mixed up anymore
  • after adding files via filebrowser the correct icon will now be shown in the treeview

Version 4:

  • You can now optionally create a tasklist instead of the normal one. This ones max. number of items isn’t bound to the max. number of recent items, however there is no setting for max. tasklist entries
  • fixed strange behaviour when moving items in the TreeView (e.g. files become groups)
  • multiple items can now be moved at once
  • the icons-folder will be created if it doesn’t exist (fixes the “Datei “…\iconInfo.dat” kann nicht erstellt werden.” bug)

Version 3:

  • You can add single files to the jumplist by dragging the file on the superbar entry of Jumplist-Launcher while holding the shift-key
  • Folder icons can be changed now
  • fixed a bug where icons are mixed up when you delete a folder icon
  • No more “Fehler beim Holen der Daten…” Error, instead it just disables the ability to set the number of entries in the registry if the value couldn’t be read

Version 2:

  • Up to 60 (before only 10) jumplist-items possible
  • You can change the maximum number of jumplist-items inside the program
  • New items are added in the correct groups now
  • Ordner können auch der Liste hinzugefügt werden

Featuresjumplistlauncher1

  • no installation and rubbish in the registry
  • Creates jumplists with up to 10 60 programs or files which can then be directly started(Warning: The setting Max. Jumplist-Items changes the number of possible entries globally for the whole Windows-environment)
  • the jumplist entries can be grouped
  • An entry can be assigned to be opened upon left-clicking the superbar-icon of the Jumplist-Launcher
  • Every entry may contain command-line arguments
  • after creating the jumplist, no program needs to run in the background
  • you can have multiple Jumplist-Launcher-Icons (with different files/programs) on your superbar by copying the folder
  • files can be dragged into the Jumplist-Launcher from Windows-Explorer
  • Icon and name of the entry can be customized
  • Jumplist-items can be added by dragging single files on Jumplist-Launchers taskbar-icon while holding the shift-key

Requirements

  • Microsoft Windows 7 RC

Benutzung

  1. Start Jumplist-Launcher.exe
  2. Add Groups by clicking the ‘Add Group’ button and rename them by clicking on their name in the treeview

  4. You can reorganize the order of groups and files by selecting them in the treeview and pressing the up or down-button
  5. if needed change the number of max. Jumplist-items
  6. When you are done, click on ‘Create Jumplist’ to save everything and Create the jumplist
  7. Pin the program to the superbar
  8. Close the programm

Known issues

  • Changing the maxmimum number of Jumplist-entries changes the number of recently used files all across Windows 7This can’t be fixed at the moment because both numbers are represented by only one number in the registry

To-Do

  • Multiple taskbar entries with different icons with just one instance of the program
  • Save settings as a XML-file
  • any ideas?

jumplistlauncher2

FAQ

Q: The program gives weird error-messages

A: The data is likely to be corrupt. In order to start fresh, delete all content of the icons-folder but

the folder itself and the ‘settings.dat’ which is located in the Jumplist-Launcher-folder

Q: How can I have Jumplist-Launcher pinned on the superbar with my own icon

A: Create a shortcut of the Jumplist-Launcher.exe and pin that to the taskbar

Q: 10 60 files/apps only? …I need more

A: You can copy the whole Jumplist-Launcher folder and paste it somewhere else.

Both Jumplist-Launcher.exe use different datasets and therefore can have different files/programs linked to them

    Moin!

    First off I love this app, it is exactly what I was looking for.  My issue is that several times a day, when I right click on JL my list is empty.  I have to open the configuration and click update Jumplist and then it is repopulated.

    • http://www.ali.dj Hedgehog

      Do you have CCleaner installed?

    When should “we” your audience expect an update?

    • http://www.ali.dj Hedgehog

      Sorry, that I’ve been promising it for that long. I just finished my studies and have a lot of work to do. I’m planning to redo it soon though. First two DJ things, then I’ll update both WordPress plugins, then the new JL. That’s the plan for now.

  • http://twitter.com/ShinMagus Bernardo Luz

    Asking for ideas? Ok. :)
    How about switching jumplists when you left-click the icon? The icon could change to reflect this “profile change”.

      Sounds very interesting. I’ll keep that in mind but redo JL first.

    Settings should be stored in the ProgramData Directory

    • http://www.ali.dj Hedgehog

      No, doing this on a Windows-system is against my principle of keeping the
      system clean and the program portable.

      On a Unix and Mac-system I could live with that but Windows-environments are
      messy enough already.

      User data: c.users….
      Programmdata: c.programmdata

      thats the way microsoft sees it. At least, your settings arent stored in the program files folder, cause win7 virtualize this und put its somewhere else. Normal Users shouldnt have write access to the program files folder for security reasons. So its a good idea to store nothing else but exe and dll files there. Thats a principle of security.

      sorry dont know hoe to answer in a different way

    • http://www.ali.dj Hedgehog

      You are completely right on this one.
      Still why don’t you like the way settings are stored inside the program-folder?

    Relative paths don’t work. But I made a environment variable %dropboxtools% with the correct folder on each pc. I also use %programfiles% to open websites in firefox. I encountered another small problem. I use your program in a folder on dropbox. I add your software to the taskbar on all my PCs. That way I can add a program or link or …  on 1 PC and it recreates itself on the other PCs. The problem is that jumplistlauncher keeps recreating the icon files. So the icon folder keeps getting fuller :)

      I had the same problem, same OS. Don’t know what’s going, but this resolved it:

    Is it possible to link to relative locations?

    A little example:
    d:ToolsJumplistLauncher
    d:ToolsTool1
    d:ToolsTool2
    d:ToolsTool3

    I want to put these folders on a USB drive or on my dropbox.  So when I open jumplistlauncher the path is different on each computer. It would be nice to be able to set “..Tool1″
    “..Tool2″
    “..Tool3″
    as path.

    • Anonymous

      I have to admit I never tried that. Why don’t you do that and report if it works? Simply add some folder and change the path then.

      If it doesn’t work I’ll make sure it does in the next version.

      It’s a great app for what it does. I’m not gonna diss an app because it doesn’t quite work on my system. There could be a billion reasons that caused this situation, the fact that existing lists are having probs indicates to me the cause must be elsewhere.

    Doesn’t work for me at all on Win7 Ultimate x64.  Jumplists don’t appear.  Also, when I click on the icon instead of launching JumplistLauncher.exe, it launches the first of my files that I put in the list, and I need to delete defaultstart.dat in order to get JumplistLauncher window.

  • Archon

    Hi all. Just posting to let you know that some of the problems I was having with Jumplist Launcher not being able to save things or not finding files went away when I went into the security tab of its folder properties and added group “Everyone” with “Full Access”, or by adding “Full Access” to “Users” if it doesn’t already have it. A bit insecure, but it seems to be working.

      Thanks for this tip, Archon.

    • Anonymous

      I can’t do this, but you can already open the Jumplist by left-clicking on
      the icon and then dragging the mouse-cursor up. It just needs some time to
      get used to.

  • Ash2237

    First off, amazing work dude! I really love this program and appreciate the hard work you put into it. I’ve been looking for something like this for months now. I do have a small bug report for you though – occasionally, for no apparent reason I’m aware of, one or more jumplist icons will revert to the default unknown icon for a shortcut. This can be solved by pinning and then unpinning the icon (or vice versa) but as you can appreciate, this becomes tedious after several times, especially since it distorts the list order. Hope you can help out with this – any info on when the next version will be out? Once again, great work and thank you.

    Love this program, but there seems to be a problem with the Jumplist and that is it keeps losing the items all the time. I have set the amount of items to be displayed as 14 and added my items, but sometimes when I right click on the Pinned program all I see are the standard two menus:- JumplistLauncher and Unpin this program from the Taskbar.

    great app!! thank you!

    a couple of problems: when i tried to change the max number of items, a shortcut to the recent places appeared on my desktop (and still i can’t get rid of it).

    i’m using the tasklist behavior, as i need to list many applications but i don’t want to enlarge the jumplist of the whole system. the problem is my tasklists only displays 14 items. it showed more only once, but i didn’t anything particular. a few seconds later it was back to 14 with no apparent reason!! i can’t be more precise, as i don’t have any hints

    running on win7 64bit.

    i’ve a feature request too! would it be possible to automatically list all the files/shortcuts in a folder, so that the list is updated whenever the launcher settings are saved? i’m not asking for a watcher program in the background, i’d just like the list to regenerate when i press a button.
    thanks!!

    • Anonymous

      The number of startlist and jumplist-items are controlled by the same registry-value.
      There is no solution for that problem.

      In the next version. Jumplist-details will be saved in an XML-file. I think I will add your suggestion as well. This sounds pretty good.

      i’m looking forward for the next release! keep on with the great job!

    • Anonymous

      Normally the Jumplist-size is determined by the mentioned registry-value and limited by the screen-size but 14 is really a bit too few.
      I hope this improves in the next version (which is completely rewritten).

    Hi

    I would write in German but my language skills are bad :o /

    In jumplist launcher if you have 2 files with the same filename in different paths then jumplist launcher always chooses the first path. This is frustrating as I use it to run multiple revisions of Firefox for debugging and have to rename the .exe files so that I can use jumplist launcher with them.

    e.g.
    First entry:
    C:Program Files (x86)Mozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe
    Second entry:
    C:UsersRatcliffesDesktopfirefox-4.0b2pre.en-US.win32firefoxfirefox.exe

    Because the filenames are the same it uses the first entry :o (

    Having a slight problem with JumpList Launcher. I am trying to convert from 7Stacks to JL but when I assign different versions of visual studio (2003 to 2010) to the jumplist, it will only launch VS2003. For example, I point to the devenv in the 2003 folder, the denenv in the 8.0 folder, the denenv in the 9.0 folder, etc, and when I click on the individual item, it always launched Visual Studio 2008.

    Any ideas what might be happening?

    • Al_Pennyworth

      Solved my own problem – since devenv.exe is mapped to the devenv.exe in the registry, I had to create bat files for each of the VS versions that I was using.

    Und noch was an Hedgehog:
    Wenn du die möglichkeit geben willst Icon usw. aus dem Programm heraus zu ändern könntest du die jeweilige Verknüpfung modifizieren (Ordner: %APPDATA%MicrosoftInternet ExplorerQuick LaunchUser PinnedTaskBar).
    Die Verknüpfung finden könntest du, indem du durch alle *.lnk Dateien loopst und nach dem Zielpfad der eigenen .exe vom Launcher suchst.

    Um dir etwas Arbeit abzunehmen, Object-Pascal Code um den Zielpfad einer Verknüfung auszulesen dürfte ungefär so aussehen:
    function GetLinkPath(const LinkFilePath: String): String;
    var
    IObject: IUnknown;
    ShellLink: IShellLink;
    PersistentFile: IPersistFile;
    TargetPath: Array[0..MAX_PATH] of Char;
    Wfs: TWin32FindData;
    begin
    IObject := CreateComObject(CLSID_ShellLink);
    ShellLink := IObject as IShellLink;
    PersistentFile := IObject as IPersistFile;

    PersistentFile.Load(PWChar(WideString(LinkFilePath)), 0);
    ShellLink.GetPath(@TargetPath, MAX_PATH, Wfs, SLGP_UNCPRIORITY);
    Result := TargetPath;
    end;

    Um das Icon schließlich festzulegen müsste man es mit sowas hier ergänzen:
    ShellLink.SetIconLocation(PWChar(WideString(IconPath)), IconIndex);
    PersistentFile.Save(PWChar(WideString(LinkFilePath)), FALSE);

      Vielen Dank CoderCow für die Hinweise,
      Werde ich auf jeden Fall mitberücksichtigen wenn ich JL neu schreibe.

    When I use the program [ccleaner] my list is wiped and I have to open jumplist then re-update to show the list. Can you look into this?

    IDK if you like idea’s but how about Right click = Left Click and Left Click = Right Click.

      #1: Yeah this was also mentioned by a few other users.
      I’ll definitely look into this when developing the next version.

      #2: Also answered a lot. This would be only possible if a background-service ran all the time which I despite. The beauty of JL-Launcher is that it only uses Windows 7′s native functions.
      You can launch a jumplist with a left click, by clicking on the icon and dragging your mouse-cursor up. I got used to it very fast.

    Can you add an option that we can use our own icon.png for the launcher insted of the original (blue one) please?
    thanks for your work dude :)

      Use a shortcut instead and pin that the superbar. Problem solved!

    does it work on vista?

      No, Jumplists is a feature which has been introduced in Windows 7.

    can’t get it to work with arguments – eg I use tightvnc/vncviewer.exe with “localhost:44″ as argument and get the message “Datei wurde nicht gefunden:”

      I’ll re-work this for the next version.
