Jumplist-Launcher

jumplist-launcher-icon

The newly introduced jumplists, which appear when you right-click on an icon in the superbar, help improving the workflow a lot, but if you want combine multiple programs in one icon, you’re screwed.

good stuffThe ‘Jumplist-Launcher’ comes to rescue!

It lets you add up to 10 60 programs or files within self-defined groups inside a jumplist, but see yourself:

Changelog

Version 7:

  • You can choose one default-entry which will be opened if you click on Jumplist-Launchers Superbar-icon. An entry will be added to your Jumplists which opens the configuration-window of the Jumplist-Launcher
  • The interface has been revised agaom (special thanks go to Heiko Eckendorf for the concept)
  • The issue where people were unable to create Jumplists is finally fixed

Version 6:

  • Every element can now be executed with command-line arguments (doesn’t make much sense for non-executable files though)
  • Shortcuts added via drag’n'drop will be dissolved to their target. This includes their arguments.
  • If somehow an icon couldn’t be loaded it will now be replaced by a question mark instead of throwing cryptic error messages at you
  • The interface and workflow to add files have been revised
  • People who weren’t able to change the max. number of jumplist-item should now be able to do so

Version 5:

  • groups and entries in the treeview can now be moved via drag’n'drop
  • after deleting items in the treeview icons don’t become mixed up anymore
  • after adding files via filebrowser the correct icon will now be shown in the treeview

Version 4:

  • You can now optionally create a tasklist instead of the normal one. This ones max. number of items isn’t bound to the max. number of recent items, however there is no setting for max. tasklist entries
  • fixed strange behaviour when moving items in the TreeView (e.g. files become groups)
  • multiple items can now be moved at once
  • the icons-folder will be created if it doesn’t exist (fixes the “Datei “…\iconInfo.dat” kann nicht erstellt werden.” bug)

Version 3:

  • You can add single files to the jumplist by dragging the file on the superbar entry of Jumplist-Launcher while holding the shift-key
  • Folder icons can be changed now
  • fixed a bug where icons are mixed up when you delete a folder icon
  • No more “Fehler beim Holen der Daten…” Error, instead it just disables the ability to set the number of entries in the registry if the value couldn’t be read

Version 2:

  • Up to 60 (before only 10) jumplist-items possible
  • You can change the maximum number of jumplist-items inside the program
  • New items are added in the correct groups now
  • Ordner können auch der Liste hinzugefügt werden

Featuresjumplistlauncher1

  • no installation and rubbish in the registry
  • Creates jumplists with up to 10 60 programs or files which can then be directly started(Warning: The setting Max. Jumplist-Items changes the number of possible entries globally for the whole Windows-environment)
  • the jumplist entries can be grouped
  • An entry can be assigned to be opened upon left-clicking the superbar-icon of the Jumplist-Launcher
  • Every entry may contain command-line arguments
  • after creating the jumplist, no program needs to run in the background
  • you can have multiple Jumplist-Launcher-Icons (with different files/programs) on your superbar by copying the folder
  • files can be dragged into the Jumplist-Launcher from Windows-Explorer
  • Icon and name of the entry can be customized
  • Jumplist-items can be added by dragging single files on Jumplist-Launchers taskbar-icon while holding the shift-key

Requirements

  • Microsoft Windows 7 RC

Benutzung

  1. Start Jumplist-Launcher.exe
  2. Add Groups by clicking the ‘Add Group’ button and rename them by clicking on their name in the treeview
  3. Add files/programs by either clicking on the ‘…’ button or directly dragging them into the Jumplist-Launcher window
  4. You can reorganize the order of groups and files by selecting them in the treeview and pressing the up or down-button
  5. if needed change the number of max. Jumplist-items
  6. When you are done, click on ‘Create Jumplist’ to save everything and Create the jumplist
  7. Pin the program to the superbar
  8. Close the programm

Known issues

  • Changing the maxmimum number of Jumplist-entries changes the number of recently used files all across Windows 7This can’t be fixed at the moment because both numbers are represented by only one number in the registry

To-Do

  • Multiple taskbar entries with different icons with just one instance of the program
  • Save settings as a XML-file
  • any ideas?

jumplistlauncher2

FAQ

Q: The program gives weird error-messages

A: The data is likely to be corrupt. In order to start fresh, delete all content of the icons-folder but

the folder itself and the ‘settings.dat’ which is located in the Jumplist-Launcher-folder

Q: How can I have Jumplist-Launcher pinned on the superbar with my own icon

A: Create a shortcut of the Jumplist-Launcher.exe and pin that to the taskbar

Q: 10 60 files/apps only? …I need more

A: You can copy the whole Jumplist-Launcher folder and paste it somewhere else.

Both Jumplist-Launcher.exe use different datasets and therefore can have different files/programs linked to them

    Dear Ali,

What have I done wrong? Where should I download it from? I have downloaded from here and when I run it the Create jumplist button never shows up, even after I click on save!

Also can I create mulitiple jumplists on the taskbar? I would to create 3 by right clicking on the taskbar and make 3 seperate jumplist. Is this possible?

Can I run the jumplist without having the launcher on the taskbar?

Was mache ich eventuell falsch???

Danke im voraus für hilfreiche Tipps.

Great application. With a few changes it could be something that businesses would purchase.

    (A) The ability to add a default-entry is nice. However, it would be nice if it could launch something like the Windows 7 “Getting Started” window (picture below).

    http://www.windows7update.com/images/Microsoft-Windows-7-Control-Panel-Getting-Started.jpg

This would be a great way to publish corporate applications to end-users. They have a friendly ‘Getting Started’ window, and a nice quick jumplist.

    (B) For the above to work in a business, you would have to have the ability to hide the configuration menu.

  • Arman

Hi Ali, Could I have the source code for this program? I just need to know how Putting These in the Jumplist is possible?

  • dangersgromit

It would be nice to be able to change the programme icon, so i could replace e.g. the thunderbird-icon in taskbar, which does not have any jumplist-features.

The default action would be to start thunderbird
a “New Mail” task would start thunderbird.exe -compose
a “Addressbook” task would start thunderbird -addressbook

But then there is the blue Jumplist Icon in the taskbar, and not the thunderbird-icon. I found no way arround that for now.

    • scuba

I was also looking to do same thing with a few programs. This would be very helpful.

      Thanks for a nice program

  • schokoteddy

  • DJ-Nike

Nice program, saves me using a toolbar folder!

To split the lists into seperat icons on the taskbar could you not pass in a parameter to the program to laod a different DAT file?

i.e. installation: Create shortcut to Jumplist, add parameter -list games to the end of the path, drag to start menu?

I dont know the in’s and out’s of Jump Lists but I would guess it would pass the parameter onto the program when it asks for the list?

This way you could have all kinds of jumplists from your taskbar.

Maybe have the option to change the colour of the folder or icon?

  • Jon

Nice program. One particular issue is when I execute the “add folder” option on the main window, an old dialog box with commands in german pops up. How can this be resolved?

    Thanks!

  • iker hoëk

    Nice idea Ali.

Saddly can’t use it because most of my links use paramaters and they aren’t working ok; then there’s this issue with EOleException and worst of all the lousy control of the focus.

You should release the source code and leave the community help you fix all those issues and add some more stuff. Plenty of eyes can see better than two =)

    • Ali

      I like the suggestion.
However as the Jumplist Launcher is coded in Object Pascal and has some external dependencies it would rather drive people crazy than lead to better releases.
It’s time to at least fix the parameter stuff.

Hi, great app, but it can be greater, if it will use native “Open Dialog” and translations (I can help with Russian).

  • Radu

    Great app, really really helpful.
One suggestion I have though, it should have the posibility that when you left click, to bring up the jumplist and not the configuration dialog (like it does with right click) – just an idea.

sweet program cant believe ive missed this till now.
things id like to see done with it would be:

    -icon size settings

    -thumbnails for images/videos etc.

-ability to specify a root path for a group folder.
(so that all files/folders within that root appear in the jumplist group)

-ability to make a jumplist start a program instead of the jumplist settings when clicked.

and i would agree with one instance of the program with multiple lists kept in xml, perhaps a notify icon to manage them would be nice but not a must i suppose.

thanks again just sharing suggestions! :p if theres a source somewhere maybe i can look into doing some of this myself.

    • argyleeyes

oh and i notice that the number of max jumplist-items affects the height of the start menu creating a blank area if you dont have anything in your start menu aside from the jumplists. anyway to change that side effect? cant think of anything off the top of my head.

love the app- have used it for months now. *All of the sudden it completely stopped working. R.Click opens up list, but clicking on any app or location on the list does nothing; no error message or anything. Tried recreating the jumplists and testing every possible issue and can’t figure out why it has just suddenly stopped working. Any ideas? anyone else experience this?

Win7 Ultimate- completely standard install, no tweaks. when I load an old image of my machine from fresh install, it works perfectly. apps installed at some point between working & not working:
    -webex connect
    -quicktime pro 7.6.5.
    -sorenson squeeze v6
    -PDF XChange Viewer

If you try to create a jump list with the default program enabled while the program has already been pinned, it gives an error. This happened after I removed the configuration pin added by default then tried to get it back.

    Hi buddy!
Thank you for this tool, its nice and exactly what i’m looking for, good job!
There is one cosmetic thing i would like to change. I got some groups in the Jumplist and the entry at the very bottom is the configuration option. I would prefer the possibility to move this to the top of the list or remove it? why dont just add it into the list in the configuration utility?

Then I do have a question, is there any way that a left click on the button in the superbar will open the menu with my entries? I Assume this is up to windows, right?

    Cheers
    Merlin

    • Ali

I’m sorry but I don’t understand your first question.

You can open a Jumplist by left-clicking on the icon and then pulling up the mouse-cursor. It needs some time to get used to it, but if you prefer left-clicking you’ll probably like it.

    • Merlin

Hi, here’s a picture which explains what i mean.
      http://www.merlinvs.de/jumplist.jpg
When opening the jumplist there is a extra space to go over (the Jumplist Launcher group) which could be reduced when moved to the top.

    Really good tool.
one thing, after set default icon, then almost can’t run the setting before delete the default data.

I am not family with related code, but, I think the “left” click on the task bar should have some different with right click on the icon, and select run your program, so, even you have set the default icon, you should can launch the “jump-list launch” not launch the default icon.

    thanks. :)

Fantastic. Finally, you’ve made the jumplist useful for me. I don’t need recently used files; I do need recently used programs and program groups available. You’ve filled a tremendous void in the jumplist concept.

    Nice tool, Thanks!
A check box in your settings, to change the LeftClick action (to mirror a Right Click action) would be great!

I’m not sure if this can be done, but can there be a setting your app to show the jumplist (as apposed to edit setting) with a Left click. 99% of the time you will be launching a app not editing settings. so a left click to open the JumpList would be ideal.

    Thanks, again!

    • ThatOneGuy

I agree… This would be a much better use of the Left mouse button!!!!

  • Alex71

  • Eric

There is a bug with the latest version(7.2). The program has to be placed in the C: drive for it to work. I tried putting it in D:\Tools\JumplistLauncher but it just don’t show any shortcuts I add. After placing it in C:\Program Files\JumplistLanucher, everything works. But anyway, it’s great piece of software. Thank you!

  • fritz33

many thanks for your nice little tool.

i took me hours to get it running thought!

in your readme you should mention that:
the most easy way is to open the program, then go to start-programs and drag every icon you like into the jumplist window. that is easy because start-programs will stay open and that way one can drag alot of icons very quick.

    please mention further:
click the icon in the superbar with the right mouse button to open the list!

because i always clicked the left mouse button it took such a long time until i got it working.

that there is no more “create jumplist” button is also very disturbing.

thanks to your Jumplist-Launcher i don’t have to bother with the new windows 7 unergonomic start menu.

    I’m testing v7.21
I have Windows 7 with UAC enabled.
jumplistlauncher give a German message when I try to save jumplist. I believe it failed to write to the icon folder.
Should I have saved the EXE to somewhere unprotected, instead of c:\program files?

    • fritz33

i copy it to “your name” user folder like

      AppSave – Jumlist-Launcher – 01&02&03&04&05

in each number folder i placed a copy of JumplistLauncher.exe, that way having 5 icons in the windows7 superbar.

  • http://taketwodevelopment.com Rob

First off – great app! Exactly what I was looking for.

One quick question – is there anyway to make the menu cascade?
What I mean is if I have 4 groups in the jump list w/ 10 items in each group, when I pin it to the start menu – all 40 are open, it would be great if It would cascade. Ie – hit the jump – then get my 4 groups, then when I click or hover on a group – that one expands.

    Or is that possible now?

  • Mario

Great, just what I wanted since I started using 7.

    • Mario

And I like this one better than 7stacks, ’cause it uses what already is inside w7, so it’s integrated and clean.

  • Ahmed

Not sure if you’re aware of this. But the # of items in the jump list is limited to 12, and increasing the limit to 60 effects the Startmenu.

    • Jakeu1701

I have the same issue. I like this idea better than 7stacks and the others I tried. I increased the count to 60 and no matter what, I cannot get past the initial 12 that I added, even if I try removing some of the items.

I would like to continue to use this app, but I will need more than the 12 or the ability to add more jump lists from the same instance to the task bar. Running multiple versions of the app is not something I would like to do.

    • snoopy

you can increase the amount af apps being displayed by increasing the number of jumplist entries in windows (taskbar settings – number of entries in the jumplist). after that, you have to update you jumplist. this works for me.
i have multiple instances of the app running and i think its no problem. i just have 3 folders, which contain the different instances… why don’t you want multiple instances? the app isn’n always running.

    • Ahmed

Well, I just pin the applications and this way I just bypass the limit. However, the icon caching is giving me a difficult time and driving me insane…

    • fritz33

create more groups in jumplist than you can ad more program icons

  • James

Nice app, But I prefer 7stacks.

    Hello,

This is a great tool with lots of potential! Thank you.

    Feature Request:

When you finish the To-Do “Multiple taskbar entries with different icons with just one instance of the program”

Could you also make these jump lists available on the Start Menu? As the start menu is hidden, and I don’t want to load my superbar up with a bunch of different apps (I prefer different icons for each) this idea could be useful to some users.

    Thanks, and awesome work (again!)

  • Thomas

    Hi Ali,

although I realise that already some entries exist in your blog about parameter problems, I’d like to add one. Thanks for your cool program anyway. I wanted to start the alternative chm-viewer “xchm.exe” with the VBScript-documentation. M$-software is not willing to work, because “Z:\” in my case is a network share. CHM-fixes which used to work in WXP won’t work on Win7 x64.

These are my entries in Jumplist Launcher:
    File location: C:\Utility\xchm\xchm.exe
    Parameters: Z:\Hilfe\VBSdocs\Script56.CHM

Catching the command line which is fired by Jumplist Launcher with Sysinternals Process Explorer, I get this result:

    “C:\Utility\JumplistLauncher\JumplistLauncher.exe” “/openC:\Utility\xchm\xchm.exe/parZ:\Hilfe\VBSdocs\Script56.CHM”

What I actually would expect though would look like this:

    “C:\Utility\JumplistLauncher\JumplistLauncher.exe” /open”C:\Utility\xchm\xchm.exe” /par”Z:\Hilfe\VBSdocs\Script56.CHM”

Please note the different placing of quotation marks and the space in front of “/par”. Unfortunately the result of this commandline is only windows explorer to open in “C:\Utility\xchm”-directory. The program xchm.exe is NOT being executed.

If I launch “C:\Utility\xchm\xchm.exe Z:\Hilfe\VBSdocs\Script56.CHM” in a console window or from the RUN-dialog, it will work as expected.

Maybe this is useful for you to fix the param problem when you have some spare time. I am looking forward!

    Thanks in advance, Thomas

    • FZ

I ran into the same problem, but your post helped explain why it wasn’t working. Thanks! Since it appears to be a simple string handling glitch, here’s hoping it gets fixed soon.

For now I use a workaround by making a shortcut with the appropriate command line parameters then dropping the shortcut into Jumplist-Launcher.

    • Thomas

      Hi FZ,

I wonder how you managed the workaround using a shortcut (we ARE talking about these *.LNK-files generated by windows explorer’s right-click menu NEW > SHORTCUT, aren’t we?) to use with Jumplist Launcher?

Whenever I drag and drop an shortcut like this (to stick to my example above, it would be a command line like “C:\Utility\xchm\xchm.exe Z:\Hilfe\VBSdocs\Script56.CHM” in the textbox of the dialog which is shown, when I create a new shortcut in windows explorer within a folder) into Jumplist Launcher, it recognizes what I am doing, and seperates the program from the parameter automatically. At last I end up with the same not working entry as before, i.e. “C:\Utility\JumplistLauncher\JumplistLauncher.exe” “/openC:\Utility\xchm\xchm.exe/parZ:\Hilfe\VBSdocs\Script56.CHM”.

I have to mention that I use Win7 x64 and Jumplist Launcher v7.2.

Good night and good luck – I love this one ;-) )

      Thomas

    • FZ

Hmm, my previous follow-up didn’t seem to go through. Skipping the frills, the main point was:

Paste the explicit path to your shortcut file (Shift+right-click -> “copy as path”…) directly into the “File location” field. If you drag&drop or use the “Add file” file browser the shortcut gets messed up. Be sure the shortcut name has no spaces in it.

      -FZ

    • Thomas

      Hey, that’s cool!
      Thanks for the clarification.
      Thomas

    • holx

Well, the way JL handles parameters is creating some problems for me too. My original shortcut (which works perfectly on its own) is:

      D:\SR\Sr32.exe /i /D /p”G:\@reference\Glossare\Macintosh\Mac OS X\*.xml”

And this is what JL (renamed to “Aktuell.exe” for the sake of my special structure) converts this to (copied from Process Explorer):

      “D:\Tools\Jumplists\Aktuell\Aktuell.exe” “/openD:\SR\Sr32.exe/par/i /D /p”G:\@reference\Glossare\Macintosh\Mac OS X\*.xml”"

The result is that I get a dialog from the system with the caption “Aktuell” and the error message: “Datei wurde nicht gefunden” (file not found) – this must come from German Windows 7 since the application I’m trying to call is in English, not in German.

    • Miranda

This is exactly what I was looking for but I’m also having some parameter problems like others. I am looking forward to a fix for them soon. :)

Unfortunately, creating shortcuts to the apps that I wanted to add to the jumplist didn’t work. I am a web developer and wanted quick access to all my web browsers, but IE6 and IE7 I have running in Virtual PC VMs. I have shortcuts in my Start Menu to the apps in the VMs but when launching them via Jumplist-Launcher, they just say:

There was a problem starting C:\Windows\system32\VMCPropertyHandler.dll

The specified module could not be found.

Hi, Although I think this is a brilliant addition to Win7 (Shame on them for doing away with the classic start menu), there are a few issues I’m having. I cannot add more than 10 items – even if I try making it 11 or 12, I get the error “Could not create Jumplist”.

Another suggestion I have is to reverse the roles of the mouse buttons (if possible with Windows 7 pinning). It would make more sense to have the left-click manifest the list as opposed to the right.

    Hi,

    Frust.

System: Windows 7 Enterprise x64, englisch
