Changelog

Version 7:

  • You can choose one default-entry which will be opened if you click on Jumplist-Launchers Superbar-icon. An entry will be added to your Jumplists which opens the configuration-window of the Jumplist-Launcher
  • The interface has been revised agaom (special thanks go to Heiko Eckendorf for the concept)
  • The issue where people were unable to create Jumplists is finally fixed

Version 6:

  • Every element can now be executed with command-line arguments (doesn’t make much sense for non-executable files though)
  • Shortcuts added via drag’n'drop will be dissolved to their target. This includes their arguments.
  • If somehow an icon couldn’t be loaded it will now be replaced by a question mark instead of throwing cryptic error messages at you
  • The interface and workflow to add files have been revised
  • People who weren’t able to change the max. number of jumplist-item should now be able to do so

Version 5:

  • groups and entries in the treeview can now be moved via drag’n'drop
  • after deleting items in the treeview icons don’t become mixed up anymore
  • after adding files via filebrowser the correct icon will now be shown in the treeview

Version 4:

  • You can now optionally create a tasklist instead of the normal one. This ones max. number of items isn’t bound to the max. number of recent items, however there is no setting for max. tasklist entries
  • fixed strange behaviour when moving items in the TreeView (e.g. files become groups)
  • multiple items can now be moved at once
  • the icons-folder will be created if it doesn’t exist (fixes the “Datei “…\iconInfo.dat” kann nicht erstellt werden.” bug)

Version 3:

  • You can add single files to the jumplist by dragging the file on the superbar entry of Jumplist-Launcher while holding the shift-key
  • Folder icons can be changed now
  • fixed a bug where icons are mixed up when you delete a folder icon
  • No more “Fehler beim Holen der Daten…” Error, instead it just disables the ability to set the number of entries in the registry if the value couldn’t be read

Version 2:

  • Up to 60 (before only 10) jumplist-items possible
  • You can change the maximum number of jumplist-items inside the program
  • New items are added in the correct groups now
  • Ordner können auch der Liste hinzugefügt werden

Featuresjumplistlauncher1

  • the jumplist entries can be grouped
  • An entry can be assigned to be opened upon left-clicking the superbar-icon of the Jumplist-Launcher
  • Every entry may contain command-line arguments
  • after creating the jumplist, no program needs to run in the background
  • you can have multiple Jumplist-Launcher-Icons (with different files/programs) on your superbar by copying the folder
  • files can be dragged into the Jumplist-Launcher from Windows-Explorer
  • Icon and name of the entry can be customized
  • Jumplist-items can be added by dragging single files on Jumplist-Launchers taskbar-icon while holding the shift-key

FAQ

Q: The program gives weird error-messages

A: The data is likely to be corrupt. In order to start fresh, delete all content of the icons-folder but

the folder itself and the ‘settings.dat’ which is located in the Jumplist-Launcher-folder

Q: How can I have Jumplist-Launcher pinned on the superbar with my own icon

A: Create a shortcut of the Jumplist-Launcher.exe and pin that to the taskbar

Q: 10 60 files/apps only? …I need more

A: You can copy the whole Jumplist-Launcher folder and paste it somewhere else.

Both Jumplist-Launcher.exe use different datasets and therefore can have different files/programs linked to them

I’ve not read all comments… I would like a little feature for this good app.
It would be great to show a right click menu to run, for example, a program as admin or open link file location from every apps ticked in the jumplist…

    Thanks

    • ali

As of now, this seems impossible, but I’ll do some research to find out if that is possible somehow.

  • gromit72

It would be great, if a left click on the icon would open specified programme. e.g. left click opens thunderbird (and not the settings dialog for JL), right click opens jumplist with items like create new mail, fetch mail, …, and one jumplist item should be configure jumplist and open the settings dialog.

With a feature like this, a programme not especially designed for Windows 7 can have a jumplist just like ie8, WMP and so on.

Otherwise it looks NICE! Keep up the great work.

  • dresinss

Just a suggestion.. I really like the way this works and incorporates into Windows, but considering the intended use of this feature I think it would be useful to have the ability to switch mouse button commands for the jump list. i.e.: left-click to open the list and right-click to view list properties. Thanks for the great app!

    • ali

      This sounds logical.
There must be a way to realize this.
      I will look for it.

I really like the idea of this program, Ali,
I just have to get it working for me. I also get the error “Couldnt create the jumplist,. Please wait for the next update to fix this issue.”
I noticed that I can not change the Max Jumplist-Items – could it have to do with that?
You talk about pinning it to the task bar – bit I can pin it to the start menu as well, can’t I?

    Cheers

  • CD136

    Hey
Came across it today but on clicking create jumplist i get:
“Couldnt create the jumplist,. Please wait for the next update to fix this issue.”

Problem is i dont know what the issue is. Im just trying to create an office list with word, access… in a group called office. Tried the icons and the exe’s in the install and no difference. Tried just adding one text file and that made no difference either.
    Thanks for the effort though!

  • ilike2burnthing

Previous problem solved, I’d set it to ‘remove recent documents on reboot’.

Dan – instead of using the jumplist launcher to find the files, open a separate explorer window and drop the files into the launcher.

  • Martin

    @kim and the rest

People, do NOT use it in a directories with “spaces” in their names.
Than it shouldn’t be a problem.

    do: “c:\jumplist\…” for example
    do NOT: “C:\Program Files (x86)\…”

Good “programm”, thank you very much.

Everytime I add an item, it uses the default folder icon. If i then change the icon and select Apply Changes to Item, it changes the icon for every entry to the one i have selected. Its really frustrating me, as it obviously works fine for other people. Any ideas?

  • ilike2burnthing

Hey, great app. I’ve used this on 7260 x86 and now 7264 x86, and in both, every time I reboot the jumplist ceases to function. Any idea’s?

    Thanks,

#1 Good, but always less natural than a simple left-click
#2 No, my id is rather a setting that automatically check a particular directory; The quick launch directory (C:\Users\”user”\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch) is supported by most installer, so i wouldn’t have to manually add the shortcut
#3 I had not read it but after some tries it doesn’t seem to work on my side. I have try normal list and tasklist, shortcut and exe files: No new item in the list and no error.

Haven’t added stuff manually for a while – I’ll check this out

    For the requests:
#1: You can already open the jumplists with a left-click. You just need to click on the taskbar icon, then hold the mouse-button and pull the cursor up. The jumplist will appear.

#2: So when you drag a folder on the form it should look for shortcuts inside of it or what?

#3: You should read the blog-entry for Version 3. I already added that feature.

  • fluxtendu

    A bug report:
Manually add items don’t work properly: corrupt data, no icon, strange group behaviour.
    Dropped items work fine
    (7100 rc – JumplistLauncher v4)

    And tree requests:
    - like Jay i would like to open the jumplist with a left-click (and something like ctrl-left click to open JumplistLauncher itself)
    - retreive all shortcuts in a folder (eg: Quick Launch Folder)
    - drag & drop shortcuts directly on the taskbar icon

And many thanks for this app

P.S. Ali, couldn’t you use “Application Tasks” type for the created items instead of “Custom/Recent Documents” to remove dependency upon maximum number of recent items displayed? (Though, it would remove the pinning ability.)

  • olegbl

If you’re getting the iconInfo.dat message, create an “icons” folder in the application directory, and try again.

  • kuiman

I’m getting the same iconInfo.dat message. I really wanted to use this =(

  • Kim

I keep getting the same error when trying to create jumplist.
Datei “C:\Program Files (x86)\JumpList\icons\iconInfo.dat” kann nicht erstellt werden. The system cannot find the path specified.

    Excellent job!!

It would be really nice to launch a whole group…

    Is that feasible?

It says it cannot find the file IconInfo.dat when clicking on Create JumpList

  • http://www.tomthong.de Ali

@Nik: For now just reboot and try it again.
Without peoples comments I certainly wouldn’t be able to fix all the stuff.

  • http://www.tomthong.de Ali

@maverick: I’m already working on that, but its not as easy as it sounds.

@henry, @Nik: The error won’t appear anymore in the next version.
This is just registry related, so its not connected to the Jumplist, not being created.
I’ll install another version of Windows 7 to be able to reproduce the erroneous Jumplist creation.

  • Nik

And something went wrong just again =)
I was unhappy with the folder i unpacked the files at. So i released the Program from the taskbar, and tried to move the folder. Now i can’t pin it anymore. Well, i can pin it by dragging the Launcher file onto the taskbar, but then the jumplists won’t work. Pinning it, by rightclicking the icon while it is running does not work, there is no context menu coming up when i right click. Then i deleted the whole folder and unpacked it again. But that does not work either. Also there is no “Fehler beim Holen…” Error.
Sorry for all the comments, but i just can’t wait to use the program! ;)

  • Nik

I just tried again, and did as you said: Pin it to the taskbar while it is running. And that works fine. Before i closed the app and pinned it afterwards.
So it works even though i get the “Fehler beim Holen der Daten…” Error.
    Still Win 7 RC 7100.

  • henry

@Ali: I tested this on a few machine I had… they’ve all run through windows update.

build 7127 x32 – Runs fine. No issues.
build 7127 x64 – I get the error dialog “Fehler beim Holen der Daten fur ‘Start_JumpListItems’. Program launched after the error dialog and I continued to configure it. No items in jumplist.
build 7229 x64 – There are no items in the jumplist. The tool itself runs fine with no issues.
build 7229 x64 on vmware – Error dialog “Fehler beim Holen der Daten fur ‘Start_JumpListItems’. Program launched after the error dialog and I continued to configure it. Items do show up in jumplist.

  • maverick

Really nice app! Just wish I could add multiple JumpLists without having mutliple copies of the program. Otherwise, awesome!
    Thanks for making this app.

  • http://www.tomthong.de Ali

you need to rightclick on the taskbar-item while Jumplist-Launcher ist running and pin it to the taskbar.

  • Ryan

Does not work for me on Windows 7 RC1 x64. After making a list I click create and close the options window the icon on my task bar disappears.

  • http://www.tomthong.de Ali

@Nik: I’ll add some error-handling in the next version. Hopefully we can spot the error.

@Jay: send me the German errors if you find some more :)
It’s currently impossible to not have them tief, because Windows 7 uses the same registry value for them. However I’m sure this will change in the final of 7.
Why do you want to see the jumplist if you left-click on it while you already see it when you right-click on it?
I could imagine adding the option to choose a default program/file which open if you left-click on the taskbar-entry.

@henry: That’s interesting. Are there any errors or just doesn’t appear the jumplist after creating it in the tool?

  • henry

Works great on Win7 build 7127 32-bit but does not work on build 7229 64-bit.

  • http://www.ocellated.com/ Jay

I love the concept. I’ve been able to get it to work, but it was a little rough. (For example, I clicked on “Create Jumplist” but at first still couldn’t see my shortcuts in the jumplist, several times I got errors in German, etc.)

First, if at all possible, I would really like to have the number of jumplist items not tied to the global number of “most recent” jumplist items. I have my default set at 5 for a reason, so this one’s really important for me. Surely there’s a way. (Yes, I know you can pin as many shortcuts as you want, but them you don’t get the nice grouping.)

Second, it would be very nice to disable the main shortcut icon itself. Perhaps you could make it so that if the main icon is clicked, instead of launching Jumplist Launcher, it instead opens the jumplist? This would be particularly helpful because I’ve already settled on using JL mostly as a program pinned to the start menu (as opposed to the taskbar). It be awesome if clicking on the main icon showed the list of jumplist items!

Thanks for a great program and I look forward to further updates making it easier, more reliable, and more flexible.

  • Nik

    I run Windows 7 RC Build 7100

‘Create Jumplist’ seems to work. It creates some files in the folder, when i click on it.
But there are no Jumplists, when i attach it to the Taskbar.

  • http://www.tomthong.de Ali

It looks for the entry ‘Start_JumpListItems’ in the registry but it obviously can’t find it.
I’ll threat this differently in the next version.

Which build of Windows 7 do you run?

Does ‘Create Jumplist’ work or give another error?

  • Nik

    I get an
“Fehler beim Holen der Daten für ‘Start_JumpListItems’
Error when i try to run the file.
I get to the Configuration Screen, but it does not seem to work.

Hey Brandon, been in love with your Start++ since day 1.

Yeah the tool still needs some polishing and fixing.
Would you rather have the ability to add parameters yourself?
So if you drag .lnk files into it, it resolves the lnk file to it’s original executable and carries over its attributes?

  • http://brandonlive.com Brandon Paddock

    Cool tool!

My first suggestion would be to fix it so that it doesn’t resolve shortcuts to their targets. I wanted to add a group of .lnk files which all launch the same executable but with different parameters. Instead I just got three links to the executable, all with folder icons for some reason.
